Spain Islands (Balearic & Canaries) - Guide to Spain islands

Spain (Espana) has two groups of Islands that are autonomous communities and form three provinces.
The Balearic Islands located east of Spain in the west of the Mediterranean Sea and the Canary Islands lying 100 km west opposite of the Sahara in Marocco. The Balearic Islands represent one Spanish province with the capital Palma. The four largest inhabited islands Majorca, Menorca, Ibiza, and Formentera are popular tourist destinations.
The Canaries are organised in two provinces and is formed by seven inhabited islands Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, La Palma, La Gomera, El Hierro, and the islets La Graciosa, Alegranza, Montana Clara, Roque del Este, Roque del Oeste and Isla de Lobos. Of these the largest and most populated one is Tenerife

The Canaries are an archipelago of seven islands in the Atlantic Ocean off the north-western coast of Africa.
The islands are all of volcanic origin and as the grayish rock permeates the colour of the sand on the beaches, can seem somewhat barren to visitors. The islands are an autonomous community of the Kingdom of Spain.
The islands are a popular tourist destination with due to the favourable climate and large expanses of beach, and islands such as Gran Canaria, Tenerife, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote are still welcoming large numbers of package holidaymakers at a time when independent travel is dominating tourist markets. All the Spain Islands owe their enduring appeal to guaranteed sunshine and a welcoming atmosphere. Island life runs at a refreshingly steady pace, particularly when compared to the hustle and bustle of big British cities, such as London or Birmingham. This makes Gran Canaria and the other Spanish Islands an excellent choice for anyone who wants to unwind overseas. The dramatic and frequently breathtaking terrain is also perfect incentive to get out and about whilst on vacation.

Spain Islands

The Balearic Spain Islands are located in the western Mediterranean. The islands are divided into two main groups; Gimnesias (Gymnesian Islands) and Pitiusas (Pine Islands). The first one comprises the islands of Mallorca, Menorca and Cabrera, and the latter one the islands of Ibiza and Formentera. The islands are among the most popular tourist destinations of the world due to excellent weather conditions, rich cultural heritage, great hospitality, wonderful beaches and sailing areas, interesting entertainment spots, etc. In spite of their proximity, the islands are completely different, each interesting in its own way.

Mallorca is the largest of the islands. With its rocky coastline and beaches of fine sand, it is the best destination for party people, as well as for families, individuals, etc. You can explore the north and east coast of the island and its splendid beaches or head towards the main centre, Palma de Mallorca, take a tour of the island and visit some interesting historical sites. The bright island of Menorca is famous for its green countryside, the blue crystal sea and the whitewashed houses. The island offers a good shelter of modern, developed beaches as well as of those secluded, unspoiled bays. It is the peaceful tourist resort for relaxed holiday in Spain

The semi-desert Spain Island of Fuerteventura lies just under 100km off the coast of Africa (near the border
of Morocco and Western Sahara). It enjoys a near-perfect climate with average monthly temperatures ranging from 17°C in January to 25°C in August. Fuerteventura is the longest Island in the Atlantiv archipelago at 98km north to south and the second-largest Canary Island after Tenerife. Fuerteventura is perhaps most famous for it's beaches, with over 50km of stunning white and golden sand. Despite Tourism being a relatively recent phenomenon on the island, there is a well developed infrastructure with Golf Courses, a Zoo, a Water Park and many Marine Excursions

If you are reading this, then you are already onto one of the Mediterranean’s best kept secrets – the beautiful island of Formentera. The smallest of Balearic Spain’s Islands, Formentera is just 32 square miles in area, but has everything from pristine white beaches, through to dramatic cliffs and acres of peaceful countryside. The turquoise blue waters of Formentera and its sea breeze are a constant invitation to go from calmness to action. The various water sports that you can do here will show you that what might seem small to you on foot looks huge from the sea. You will discover mysteries and sensations, thoughts and reflections that you would never experience on land.
